Mold is an organism that grows to help decompose dead organic matter. Mold is hydrophilic or water loving. Once water is introduced into the area mold will begin to grow on organic material that is no longer living, like the paper on drywall or wood.

The mold spotting in this closet is due to a small leak in the water heater. The water is evaporating and getting stuck in the closet. The humidity is collecting on the wall and mold is growing sporadically.
